Keyword Tools & Tactics That Will Get You Thinking Outside the Box

Finding the Best Keywords for Your Business

We all know how essential keywords are to the widespread presence of a Plumbing or HVAC business online. However, many people make the mistake of only using Google’s Keyword Planner to generate a list and then simply calling it a day.
The fact of the matter is that all of your competition is likely doing the exact same thing, which basically cancels out your efforts and does very little to help drive increased traffic to your website. What you really need to do is follow a proven system that will allow you to construct different types of keywords that other companies are not capitalizing on thereby eliminating much of the competition between those basic, overused, and most commonly searched phrases.

Create an avatar

If you haven’t already heard of The Fletcher Method it discusses how one should create an avatar for the customers they are trying to reach. What this means is that you need to get an idea of their thought process in order to engage them on a more personal level. As far as keyword creation goes, specifically target what their problems are and what kind of language they would use while searching for a professional who can solve them. By using the same descriptions as your prospects you can develop more detailed keywords and fashion content that truly speaks to your audience.
Content marketing has a lot to do with the useful information that you are providing to those who are facing an issue that your company is well prepared for. With this being said you want to emphasize that while installing a toilet or repairing an air conditioning system can be done on your own, your company can do a more thorough, more proficient, and more effective job at it. Leaving it up to the experts saves residential and commercial property owners from costly mistakes and ensures a safer and more reliable finished product.

Learn from those who are learning

To get an idea of what topical categories your potential customers are searching for and the way in which they do it, an educational site like Udemy is a great place to start. Here you can see the most popular courses people are viewing ranging from those who have little understanding of the field you are in to the more knowledgeable customer that desires very in-depth content.
Content descriptions are provided in Udemy allowing you to see how the topic is worded. From there you can then record those descriptions in a spreadsheet or create spin-offs that you feel are better suited to keyword search.
By circulating through the most attended courses you can continue developing short and long-tail keywords until they start becoming repetitive. The most useful keywords to your business are the main questions that come from your audience like, “How do I fix a clogged drain” or “How do I stop my air conditioner from leaking?”

Locating the keywords that matter

A tool that every business should take advantage of is Faqfox. After you type in a viable keyword Faqfox searches all of the major threads on various forums and Q&A sites. Although time consuming make sure to scrape hundreds of different pages to see what is trending among searchers. Organize phrases into a keyword density tool and take notice of the most popular ones.
Extremely popular and sizeable websites based around your niche will have tons of keywords for the taking, while the most common are unlikely to do you any good there will be some that when placed into very specific and informative content will help your business to come alive in organic search. If you find a highly acclaimed site that you think could be useful copy and paste the URL right in to Google’s Keyword Planner, which will then generate a long list of functional keywords.

Utilizing Twitter chats

Twitter chats are not to be ignored, as hashtags will guide the way to pertinent topics for your Plumbing or HVAC business. Using tools like twitterfall.com or tweegrid.com will give you the ability to view old discussions and participate in new ones in real-time to see what matters most to your audience so you can target their specific needs in your keywords and content.

A couple more keyword tools to consider

Keywordtool.io is a neat little program that operates off of the autocomplete function on Google. In other words when you type in a word like “furnace” in the search engine it will illustrate a number of 2 and 3 word phrases that are applicable to your industry. Keywordtool.io takes a common keyword such as this and follows it with every letter in the alphabet to come up with a long list of the most frequently searched phrases.
Term Explorer has both a free version and a paid account, but the latter is truly your best bet as it can potentially harvest almost 100,000 keywords related to your business. Simply punch in the name of your profession, for example plumbing, and away it goes.

Finding those hidden treasures

Generating keywords is all well and good, but you need to determine how much of your competition is using each one in order to construct a marketing strategy that will really work. If too many people in your industry are using a certain keyword or phrase then move on, the best choices are those hidden treasures buried deep within a conglomeration of predictability.
